Introducing a new cat to resident pets
Tips and tricks
When you adopt from OSCatR, a guide will be sent to you, along with the adoption papers, with instructions as to how to introduce a newly adopted cat to your resident pets.
Moving to a new environment can be very stressful for your new cat/kitten. Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue highly suggests preparing your home to minimize any stress / negative behaviours while you both get adjusted. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you get ready.
-
Prepare a safe room where the new cat will be isolated from resident pets. This room will need bowls for food, a litter box, places to hide and toys.
-
This introduction process can take up to 2 weeks.
-
Consider using pheromones dispensers found at various pet stores and veterinary clinics. This could help calm the new cat and acclimate better to his new environment as well as help your resident cat better handle this sudden change in his territory.
